Madeira Island
Destination
Explore Nature at Its Purest.
Madeira Island is a unique destination, where the mountains plunge directly into the Atlantic Ocean. If you are looking for an authentic experience away from the tourist hotspots, Madeira’s north coast is the island’s best-kept secret.
Ponta Delgada:
Our village is known for its pleasant microclimate, sheltered by the mountains, and its bathing complex. It is the perfect place to explore on foot, visit the historic 16th-century chapel next to our accommodation and experience the authentic rhythm of life in Madeira.
São Vicente (10 min away):
A must-visit destination to explore the historic centre, the famous volcanic caves (if open to the public) and admire the lush green valley surrounded by imposing mountains.
Seixal (20 min away):
Famous for Seixal’s natural black-sand beach, framed by lush green cliffs and waterfalls cascading into the sea. Here, you can also discover the spectacular natural pools of Poço das Lesmas.
Porto Moniz (30 min away):
World-famous for its natural pools formed by volcanic lava, where the sea flows gently in. A swim here is a must for anyone visiting the island.
Santana (25 min away):
Known for its iconic traditional houses, with their distinctive triangular thatched roofs.
What to See on Madeira’s North Coast: Must-Visit Places
Staying in the north of the island puts you just a short drive from some of Madeira’s most beautiful and wildest spots.
Hiking and Levadas in Madeira: Trails Near You
Madeira is a paradise for hiking and trail running. The levadas (irrigation channels transformed into walking trails) wind through the Laurissilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Near Casa da Capelinha, you can explore some of the island’s best trails:
Levada do Rei (PR 18):
A stunning trail in nearby São Jorge, relatively flat, leading through lush exotic vegetation to a hidden waterfall.
Caldeirão Verde (PR 9):
Located in Queimadas (Santana), this is one of Madeira’s most famous trails. Walk alongside magnificent gorges until you reach a lagoon with a 100-metre-high waterfall.
Fanal Trail (PR 13):
About 35 minutes by car, discover the mystical Fanal Forest, famous for its centuries-old laurel trees and the mist that creates a fairytale atmosphere.
Madeiran Beef Skewers:
Beef skewered on laurel wood, charcoal-grilled and served with bolo do caco with garlic butter and fried cornmeal. In and around São Vicente, you’ll find excellent traditional restaurants.
Black Scabbardfish:
Traditionally served with fried banana and passion fruit sauce.
Tomato and Onion Soup:
A comforting local speciality that you can easily find in our area.
Traditional Drinks:
Don’t end your day without trying a fresh Madeiran Poncha (made with sugar cane spirit, honey and lemon or passion fruit) or the famous Madeira Wine.
Madeiran Cuisine: What and Where to Eat in the North
No trip is complete without experiencing the local cuisine. The north coast preserves the island’s most traditional flavours, with generous portions and fresh ingredients.
Practical Tips for Visiting Madeira
Car Hire:
To explore the north of the island at your own pace, having a car is essential. Modern roads and tunnels connect Ponta Delgada to the airport in just 45 minutes and Funchal in 35 minutes, but it is the old, winding roads that reveal the best views.
The "Microclimates":
Madeira is known for having several microclimates in a single day. It may be raining in the mountains while the coast is sunny. Always check the Netmadeira website/app (webcams) to see live weather conditions in different areas of the island before setting off.
Layered Clothing:
The famous “onion effect”. Bring comfortable, waterproof walking shoes and swimwear, you’ll need them all on the same day!
Casa da Capelinha: Your Perfect Starting Point
After a day exploring viewpoints, climbing mountains or walking along the levadas, nothing compares to coming home. At Casa da Capelinha, you can relax in our heated pool overlooking the Atlantic, enjoy the tranquillity and recharge your batteries in the comfort of a fully equipped apartment.
